City vacancies abound — are you willing to serve your community?

There are several upcoming opportunities for residents to serve their community.  Descriptions of opportunities to serve on the City Council, Planning Commission, Civil Service Commission, and Budget Advisory Committee can be found on the City website

Steve Friedman’s election to Mayor means there will be a vacancy for the remaining two years of his City Council term beginning January 1. The City Council appears to be fast-tracking the process, requiring applicants for the vacancy to return their application by December 15 at 2:00 PM. The vote for appointment will be on January 9. You can click here to apply.

Two positions are opening up on the Planning Commission, which reviews city code changes before they go to the council. Councilmember-elect Ryan Olson must resign his position on the Commission to take his place on the Council. The individual appointed to Olson’s position will fill his term until 2024. Brendan Pack’s term on the Planning Commission is coming to an end. The individual appointed to Pack’s current position will serve a four-year term. We do not know if Pack will be re-applying for another term.

The Civil Service Commission, which oversees matters related to the police department, has two positions opening up. Commission Chair Brian Ouellete and David Sinnett have terms expiring December 31.

The Budget Advisory Committee is appointed annually, and we do not yet have details on how many individuals the Council will choose to appoint to this Committee.

These unpaid volunteer positions are critical to the functioning of our city. Please consider throwing your hat in for the chance to serve our community.
